We are going to take a trip slightly off the wall today and instead of looking at Mexican Pine we are going to look at Mexican Oak Furniture. When we look back at the history of the style it is out of necessity that it is made from pine in other words a soft wood is a dam sight cheaper then a hard wood.

We had previously looked at Amalfi Mexican Furniture and really focused then on the nature of the finish. The main difference we looked at then was between the ranges from the likes of Seconique and Amalfi and we mainly focused on the fact that Seconique was more distressed than Amalfi.

Although the Amalfi Furniture Range is more expensive it must be noted that there is a distinct difference in quality where some ranges even boast dovetailed joints and much more solid pine is used as opposed to chipboard or even MDF.

The picture really do not do the range justice but suffice to say it is well worth considering especially if you can get to see it in the flesh. As a quite comparison the Amalfi Three Drawer Bedside you can pick up around the £65 price mark and you can still get something of a deal in cheaper ranges with some furniture shops still selling at sub £50 price levels.

Although not Mexican in style this does at least bear some resemblance to Mexico Furniture but only by name. It is very completively priced at under £200 and as we know from our Sofa Beds Sale website this is very cheap for a sofa bed.

Reviews for the product are not too bad although in the interests of fairness the most recent one is a very low score and the consumers posted:-

Not a good purchase, Very uncomfortable and over priced, very poor design, had one night on it would not want a second.

This was easy to assemble looks good and very comfortable ideal for a guest room as a sofa or bed.

Full credit to Argos for allowing negative reviews on their own site, I trust the good ones so much more when we see some balance. So basically a mixed bag as far as reviews go, as a temporary bed and a reasonable sofa we suspect it will do the trick considering the price. Self Assembly but beds are normally pretty easy to put together.

We thought it was about time we looked again at the current best price for Mexican Pine Furniture as as usual we will use a Mexican Style Bedside as the product to benchmark prices.

So we started to keep an eye on prices it would appear prices have risen just a little over the last few years. We were originally touting £40 a a baseline price but now that seems to have risen to around £50.

The cheapest we have found is Charlies Direct Telephone: 0845 077 0708 currently listing the product at £40 plus delivery. This looks to be the Seconique brand.

If you would like to consider looking for what is regarded as a better quality piece, namely the Amalfi range from Core then the oddly named Hip Furniture seems to be currently offering the best deal, they can contacted on 0845 224 1481.

When it comes to buying furniture I think most people want to see it in the flesh, we have a lot of regional sites where we look more cleosly at local independant furniture stores like say Eddershaws Furniture our advice is to get a benchmark price online and go and talk to your local store. OK it is unlikely that they will match the price but you will get a better deal and supporting local business is a good thing we think.

There has been much debating lately, amongst us Furniture folk over which is better - Rustic Solid Oak Vs Corona Mexican Pine Furniture. Now, some of the most basic differences are that Pine is soft wood and oak is a solid wood. What this means in terms of furniture really comes down to wear and tear. If you had 2 exact units, but one is oak and the other is pine, and have them both in the same area over a 10 year period, taking the same abuse from the kids, or pets - over that 10 year course, the solid oak furniture will be in much better condition than its pine counterpart.

Now, thats not the number 1 reason to invest in solid oak furniture over Corona Mexican Pine Furniture, because as we all know, people like to buy furniture that is reflective of the room it will be going in, so some customers may prefer to the appearance of Corona Mexican Pine, which is fine, but if thats the case you can get some furniture that is made from solid oak, but has a very close resemblance to corona mexican pine furniture, in terms of appearance. Finally lets talk about (probably) the number 1 issue when it comes to buying furniture, and that is cost. The simple fact is Oak lasts so much longer than pine, and that is something you should remember when buying new furniture.

One option you have when looking for Mexican Style Furniture is to source from some more conventional sources like Argos.

In fairness to Argos their furniture offer is massive! The Puerto Rico 1 Drawer Bedside Chest pictured comes out at £63. Now from looking at the picture and description of this and using our experience in the furniture industry we are guessing this comes from the same source as Pine Solutions.

Likely country of origin is Brazil but this is speculation on our part.

Argos boast that it is solid pine and it is worth making sure this is 100% correct prior to purchase. If the bedside is solid pine then at £63 it is not a bad deal.

We have decided to remove most adverts from the site and removed the links to Amazon. The reason for doing this is that we want to become an independent review site collating reviews of all things to do with Mexican Furniture.

Hopefully over the next few months should see us migrate to more of a buying guide.

There are a few good sites to buy off such as Pine Solutions and even the mainstream suppliers do not have a bad offer, the Puerto Rico brand of furniture is not awful. Overall though we feel that best value is presented by Core and their Flat Pack ranges like Amalfi, Santa Fe and their own version of Corona Mexican Furniture.

A lot of the retailers selling Mexican Pine Furniture are maybe a name you have not heard of before so maybe this one is an option, namely Amazon. The first few pictured are Corona Bedside table, those are Seconique pictures so it is the main range of Mexican Pine Furniture being sold in the UK.

I see a lot of this furniture around on Argos mainly so is it a good choice.

The prices are not much to shout about but buying from a big store like Argos does have its advantages, ease of purchase being one.

This is the speel from the Argos site for a bedside:-

Very often when looking at furniture on line it is very hard to get a good fell for the furniture as the pictures are often taken from a long way off.

So to this end today we show two close ups of two of the leading Mexican Furniture Brands.

Quality wise I would say that Core wins this battle, the different tone of the Santa Fe is a matter of taste but the quality of the wood is clearly much better in Santa Fe Furniture.

Dovetailed joints seal the deal. Core also do a Corona range and it is not as light as Santa Fe but is lighter than the Seconique Corona. There was some talk about Core Corona getting dovetailed joints but not confirmed as of yet.

It's that time again using the Corona bedside as a benchmark and it's neck and neck between Pine Solution and Right Price Furniture coming in at £38 and £39 respectively. I've known Right Price discount heavily if you've a bulk order so it's worth giving them a ring to see if their prepared to do a deal of some kind.

Solutions are not stating if it's Seconique Mexican Pine but it looks dam close.

Surprisingly Tesco are not far away with £39 offer although details on that are sketchy. They don't mention if it's solid pine or not and from experience it could be MDF knowing Tesco:)

Noticed that Viva Home Store were just chipping in at under £36 with a special 25% discount. Not heard of this company before and I couldn't find any reviews which isn't a good sign.

When buying furniture I like to see some reviews of the company if their all good I think that's a bit suspect but a mix so I can make up my own mind.

Not seeing any would suggest a very small company, still it's a good price!

Mexican Pine Bedside Benchmark Price

I looked recently at the cheapest priced Mexican Furniture and normally use the bedside as a benchmark. A year ago I could still find it for £36 but now the price seems to have risen to around the £40 mark.

This was for the core corona which I feel is a better product that the normal imported corona ranges you see. So whilst the price is up a little the quality has improved as well.

Corona is the biggest brand of Mexican Pine Furniture out there. The biggest distributor is Seconique although they are trade only.

We're not really sure who was the first to brand their range Corona but now it's extremely common.

Normally the range is supplied with black metal fixings and has a light wax finish. The collection has pieces to suit bedrooms, living and dining rooms.

How distressed or rustic the finish seems to change with time, on looking at the range recently many of the marks on the furniture had been removed. Furthermore I saw none of the simulated wood worm holes that was typical of Corona Ranges at one stage.

The retailer did explain that some customers were complaining that their furniture had wood worm, I bet it took some explaining that it was a feature!

Segusino Mexican Pine Furniture

Another brand that's coming up recently is the Segusino Mexican Furniture range.

Few differences here it's fully assembled being the main one but also the handles are pretty unique.

We'd be a little nervous of it though as we can't see any mention of dovetailed joints or 100% solid pine.

The Bedside which we normally use to benchmark prices comes out at just a shade under £100 so it's not cheap!

Porto Mexican Furniture

We've seen quite a few now rebrand their Mexican Furniture to Porto. There seems to be a growing endless list of Mexican Furniture Range Names.

It looks to be the normal sort of quality usually flat packed and not done in enough quantity to rival the Corona Ranges yet.

I've looked round at a few of the voucher code sites and they still pretty meaningless con if you ask me.

Another brand that seems to be rising in popularity is Segusino Mexican Furniture.

From what we've seen it looks expensive and doesn't do much in terms of quality.

So overall the best mexican furniture remains Corona.

Compare Core Amalfi v Corona Furniture

The Amalfi range from Core is often eclipsed by the sheer volume of stockists carrying the Corona range of furniture.

From what we've seen the range actually has a more consistent finish that the Corona ranges. Now you could argue that a lightly distressed finish is synonymous with the style of Mexican Furniture but that's a matter of taste surely?

There are a number of brands to look at when looking for Mexican Style Furniture. The most popular by far goes by the name of Corona by Seconique. A few of the big stores re-brand this for example Argos label theirs Puerto Rico and Tesco do the same going by the name of Catarina.

The cheapest generally is from the 'second line' furniture stores although you would have expected Argos or Tescos to come up with an aggressive offer they seem way out on price.

Always check for reviews either on the suppliers site or look around the internet. Although you could argue that some reviews on the suppliers site could be taken with a pince of salt in the UK they could be asked at any time to prove the reviews are authentic by Trading standards.

I thought I'd start this site up by covering the major suppliers of the Mexican Pine Furniture collections.

First off though lets establish exactly what we mean by Mexican Pine Furniture or Mexican Furniture as it's sometimes known.

Mexican style furniture started to become popular in the USA mainly as a result of the close physical and cultural links between Mexico and the US.

It's not really clear how this then started to take off in the UK. It could be argued that cheap package holidays to Spain starting during the 60's meant that tourists returned home with a desire to furnish their homes in a similar style.

The style now is well established and is captured in the picture on the right.
